READING/ONGOING
what did you eat yesterday?
cooking manga about the daily life of a gay couple. i don't actually care that much about this manga but for some reason i can't stop reading it
don't call it mystery
kunou totonou, college student, ends up solving various cases and helping people with his insights. set in the 21st century but something about it feels sort of pleasantly old-fashioned. i like totonou as a protagonist who isn't aggressive about getting involved with stuff but also can't seem to stop noticing things. ongoing. caught up to chapter 14.6
souboutei must be destroyed
SOUBOUTEI MUST BE DESTROYED!!!! i got really close to finishing it several months ago and then ran out of steam for some reason but im desperate to actually finish it and find out what happens
usotoki rhetoric
girl who can hear when people are lying joins a private detective and they work together to solve cases. showa-era ish, slice of life ish. i think it's still ongoing? caught up to chapter 40
my dear detective
similar vibe/era/setting to usotoki rhetoric but no extra powers and this time the female main character is the detective. ongoing i think? caught up to chapter 26
kemono jihen
half-youkai kid is adopted by a tanuki detective and starts assembling special stones to learn more about his missing parents. modern era, more shounen-y, fun! ongoing. i'm on chapter 35 currently
akane-banashi
girl follows in her father's footsteps to become a rakugoka! very fun, slice of life mostly but with the occasional vibe of a sports manga. i love a rakugo manga. ongoing. caught up to chapter 127
maiko-san chi no makanai-san
two best friends go to kyoto to become maiko - kiyo instead becomes the caterer for the maiko house, while her best friend becomes a rising star among maiko. extreme comfort manga that also made me interested in cooking again. ongoing. caught up to chapter 287
descending stories
another rakugo manga but this time with more dilfs. i think it's completed but i'm only about halfway through (maybe around chapter 18?)
my master has no tail
tanuki rakugo manga!! young tanuki goes to the big city, is unable to prank anyone in traditional tanuki fashion, sees a kitsune woman doing rakugo, becomes enamored with this type of tricking humans, and becomes kitsune woman's apprentice. it's cute and fun and i love it. i think it was completed recently but i started it from the top so i'm only on chapter 3
hikaru ga shinda natsu
the vibes of this one are sooooo peak. guy's best friend/crush (hikaru) dies in the mountains and a supernatural creature of some kind takes hikaru's place. i want more stuff like it
READ/HAVEN'T UPDATED IN FOREVER
yuri espoir
young rich lesbian at an all-girl's school is engaged by her father to a man she's never met. before she 'dies', she and her best friend begin a yuri journal, where they people-watch and imagine yuri scenarios between them. most recent chapter is 19.5, last updated 6/15/2023
takopi's original sin
a quick little time loop esque manga. what if doraemon ended up with elementary schoolers who had issues. it was pretty solid! made me want to read dedede again mostly
dead dead demon's dededededestruction
follows our two protagonists from high school through college in a tokyo where a giant alien ship has settled over the city. i think about this one all the time
gofun go no sekai
time loop manga about living buddha statues showing up and trying to wipe out humanity. it was definitely fun but it was also pretty disjointed plotwise so it wasn't super satisfying
summertime render
top tier time loop manga. super fun and a really nice blend of mystery, thriller, supernatural, and horror
ghost hunt
i think this one got discontinued which sucks cause its my favorite ghost hunting manga
tsubaki-chou lonely planet
i like yamamori mika's art style a lot so ive read most of her stuff. its all pretty formulaic but for some reason tsubaki-chou stuck with the most. it's probably my favorite of her works
list ongoing as i try to remember what i've read
TO CHECK OUT
majin tantei nougami neuro
looks like a supernatural detective manga
nijuu mensou no musume
mystery manga
master keaton
i think i started reading this back when i was reading every possible thing by naoki urasawa i could find. sort of like what if indiana jones was a british insurance inspector maybe? it didn't compel me but i want to give it a shot again
Q.E.D.
somehow seems really familiar even though im sure ive never read it before. high school msytery manga, i think
shiki
someone said this was similar to summertime render so it's on my list
blood on the tracks
the recommendation plaque at the bookstore said this one was kinda fucked up but im intrigued
karada sagashi
high school time loop manga recommended if you liked summertime rendering....we'll see
shadows house
haunted doll manga?
rascal does not dream of bunny-girl-senpai
i held off on this one for a long time because i trash talked my girlfriend's dad for liking it but now it is my turn to be hoisted by my own petard because the more i learn about it the more it DOES intrigue me
shin sekai yori
vibes intriguing
DROPPED
shinai naru a-jou e no mystery
more iffy about this one but it IS a mystery series. UPDATE: too much sexual assault for my tastes
heavenly delusion
this one fuckin had me until the super bad sexual assault bit and i just can't pick it up again
